I liked the ending scene in this so much that I uploaded it to Youtube, here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAH-FBd8lfM
Woo! I was right! I knew since episode 1 that Hinata was really her sister and that she took her place, that's just the vibe that the anime gave me since she was such a happy girl and yet so sad and troubled. I am kind of thinking that Hayami's family wasn't "Scattered" like Hamaji said, but they were probably burnt to the ground in the house and no one actually knows that, except Hayami and that's why she can't go anywhere. I was also kind of thinking that she might be trapped there as a kind of hostage if they really were separated, as in, "We have your daughter here, don't come back or we will kill her."
But, yes, this was the best episode so far. I knew Hinata was totally insane! Hotaru! Yay! That's why I made a club to her on MAL early on, even though she really wasn't my type because I felt a deep insanity within her, but then I changed it to a Otoha and Hinata club because I started to think that she had to take her sister's place after she died and it's what happened, so yay! My club makes semi-sense. Yes, this was the best episode so far, I am really happy that stuff has been happening.
The episode started with Hinata and Otoha sitting together as children with Hinata looking miserable, but drawing a picture book and Otoha looking happy, as always. It says that she just wanted to cry out that her real name is...
The episode then goes to Hinata walking to school by herself, looking very troubled with Otoha stalking her from behind a tree, also looking very troubled. Hayami and Hirose approach and ask her to walk with them and then everyone is in school when the episode begins, working on their yukatas for the festival that is coming up and it shows Hayami working hard at hers and then handing it back to another person, who is extremely grateful and happy and says that Hayami is really skilled. A bunch of other girls come over and agree that she is really skilled and she says that she has been doing it since she was a child, after all. Hirose asks them about it and they say that all the girls are making them for the festival and that it was Hinata's chan. He asks all the girls and Hamaji says yes and then it shows Yui being very troubled with her thread, so they tell her to ask Hayami for help, too and she says no, at first, but then says that if Hayami insists, she will have to. Hayami says no thanks and then Yui whines and demands she helps her, too and then everyone laughs at her. For an unknown reason, Hinata is sitting in the middle of everyone looking very troubled and sad, so Hamaji asks if she needs help, too, but she says she is fine and then everyone starts wanting to show her theirs and adores her, as always and she softens her expression a bit and looks semi-happy again.
Hinata, Hayami and Hirose all walk home together and Hirose talks about how it is good that Yui doesn't pick on Hayami anymore. Hayami gets kind of embarrassed, but agrees and has a flashback of their time together at the remains of Hayami's house. Hirose then says it's all thanks to Hinata wanting to be by Hayami's side. She says no, but he tells her yes and then before they go off together, Hayami thanks Hinata, with a blush on her face and then runs off after Hirose.
As Hinata returns home she has a flashback of when Hirose first saw her little sister, Hotaru's room. At this time, for some reason, she decides to go inside that room now, very quietly. She looks around very sadly and then goes and gets something under the bed that's in a little box. From the box, she pulls out her picture book that you saw in the first scene of the episode. She looks through it at the pictures inside, smiling happily and you see that the story was about the Spirit of Sounds of Time, the same thing that Otoha calls herself.
As she looks through the book she is happy, but once she gets to the blank pages she gets extremely sad, but then her grandfather comes in and yells at her, telling her that he told her never go in the room again. He asks if she was with Hayami again today and when she does not answer, he calls her a disgrace and leaves the room.
Hinata runs out after him and tells him that she doesn't want to do this anymore and in a rage, her grandfather grabs Hinata by the hair and drags her down to the room where her sister's shrine is and forces her to look at the picture there and then tells her to say it again. He asks her if she is not going to keep her dying sister's wish and protect the house in her place? He yells at her and calls her Hotaru, instead of Hinata and it's the first time you actually have a clue of what's wrong with Hinata.
Hinata then has the flashback of her sister, Otoha, telling Hinata she will go and pick some flowers for her, but she calls her Hotaru instead of Hinata. Then you hear a splash and then you see Otoha floating dead in the water. Hinata is standing on the shore, unable to do anything and the flowers are just across the water.
In the next scene, you see the family saying that it is a tragedy that Hinata died and that it would have been better if Hotaru had died. Some men say that it is over for the Kagura family now, but then her grandfather comes to Hotaru (who we knew as Hinata) and tells her that Hotaru has died and that she will take over her sister's place and that Hotaru died, not Hinata. She IS Hotaru, though, so they are telling her to fake being her older sister and tell everyone else that she died instead. Hotaru is very confused, but her grandfather tells her that this is what Hinata wanted, too and that it is what everyone else in the village wanted - for Hinata to live on, so Hotaru would take over Hinata's place.
They hold a funeral then and the funeral is for Hotaru Kagura and Hotaru, herself, has to attend, pretending to be her sister, Hinata instead. She is in her room looking at the picture book for one last time before cutting off her hair to the length that Hinata's was and then with tears in her eyes, she smiles brightly, trying to be like Hinata, this is obviously a totally insane action for a little girl that just lost her older sister.
After that it goes back to present day and you see her grandfather tell her that she is not allowed to revert back to being Hotaru and that she isn't allowed out for a few days now, so she has time to cool her head. Shattered, Hotaru lays there on the floor, crying and thinking back to the times with her older sister.
She has another flashback then of when Hinata was still alive and some people coming to their house to praise Hinata and how wonderfully charming she is. Hinata smiles and greets them happily and they talk about how different Hinata is from her sister. Hotaru is hiding behind them, looking from behind a wall and the people see her and ask who she is. Her grandfather yells at her to come and say hi and Hinata looks at her happily, but she runs away, super shy. You then hear the people of the village going on about how wonderful Hinata is, but her younger sister, Hotaru is a shame and a disgrace and a waste and asks if her grandfather is worried about their line.
Hotaru is sitting by herself outside crying when her sister, Hinata, comes over and gives her a piece of candy, saying what Hotaru had been saying to others the entire time. Hotaru cheers up a bit and then Hinata asks her about the book she is drawing and she tells her abou tis about the Spirit of the Sounds of Time, Otoha and no one can see her except the Promised One and Otoha is looking for The Promised One so that he can help fix the village in the story. If the village is not fixed then Otoha can't return to the spirit world. Hinata loves the story but says that she feels bad for the Promised One because if Otoha went back then wouldn't he be alone, and by this, they are both troubled for a moment, but you can still see that Hinata loves her sister and adores her for what she is.
Back in present day Hinata is still in front of the shrine and holds the sketchbook close to her, crying even more, yet again.
Back at school, the girls are working on their yukatas still and Hayami is outside by herself thinking and looking sad when Hirose comes up behind her. She says that Hinata has already been absent for three days and that she is sure it's because of her. He says that they should go to her house, but she says that all she can do is distance herself from Hinata. Hirose yells at her and tells her that would probably make Hinata sad and Hayami says there is nothing she can do, but Hirose has a flashback of Otoha telling him that he only thinks there is stuff he can't do before giving him his vision and then tells Hayami that she just thinks she can't do anything. He points out that he was able to become friends with her and that she was able to become friends with Hinata again and that he does not want to give up after coming so far and that they would find something to do for her.
Back in her house, Hotaru is being depressed and thinking about the times after Hinata died and she had to take over her life. At school she looks like Hinata, and she tells everyone that she is Hinata, so everyone believes she's her and then she gets 100s and is extremely popular and everyone praises her all the time. Everyone loves her for being who she is, but sometimes she hears people say that it is better that Hotaru died instead of Hinata and this, of course, hurts her deeply since she is, in fact, Hotaru. You see her go from when her hair was cut short like Hinata before she died, to letting her hair get longer and longer and all along, everyone loves her for everything she does, but she still is not happy deep down inside. She keeps hearing all of her friends and the people that know her repeat the name, "Hinata" "Hinata" and it starts to get to her, obviously.
She gets up and once again, goes to her sister's room and the sketchbook and looks at it and puts her hand to it and suddenly, you see her sister, Hinata, the spirit, beside her, looking at her with hope. Hotaru looks sadly away and then moves her hand from the book, and Hinata looks very sad and disappointed, but uses her magical wind to blow open the book to the blank, empty pages that she never finished and instead of being happy, Hotaru collapses on the book and cries even more. Surprised and sad, again, Hinata reaches out to touch her sister, but before she can, Yui, Hamaji and Maki are at the door, asking for her, but she does not come.
That night, Hinata is in her room and you see that she has notes and work from her friends at school and that's what they stopped by for. There are a bunch of notes that tell her to come back to school soon and they miss her and will see her at the festival and by this she gets kind of happy, but seeing the name 'Hinata' over and over again, bothers her. She then sees that there is a complete yukata in the bundle of things and she is surprised when a note falls out. She opens it up to find that Hayami finished the yukata for her and that she, like everyone else, was missing her and couldn't wait to see her again. She tells her what Hirose said to her, which is that she only thought she couldn't do things and this deeply affects Hinata, who has yet another flashback.
This time she and her sister, Hinata, are in Hinata's room together and Hotaru is crying with her sketchbook and Hinata is asking why her grandfather told Hotaru to stop drawing again and Hotaru says because she is supposed to be more like Hinata. Hinata gets mad and asks why her sister is supposed to be more like her instead of being herself. Hotaru says she does not know but then goes on about how she is useless and Hinata asks how she is useless. Hotaru then says she has no friends, she's bad at sports, she's bad at school and sometimes she even wets the bed at night. Hinata laughs at her and says that maybe she is useless, but when Hotaru almost cries again, she says she was only teasing and tells her sister that she is fine the way she is and that she can't draw as well as Hotaru. This surprises Hotaru and Hinata goes on about how she could never make such wonderful stories and that if they showed everyone Hotaru's drawings, they would definitely fall in love with her, too, but Hotaru is scared and nervous and Hinata tells her that she hates it when her sister is like that and it's not that she can't do it, it's just that she think she can't - exactly what Hirose said to Hayami, so it's something that she recognized from her sister.
After this flashback, Hotaru is finally determined and you see her sitting at her desk late into the night and the next morning, the sketchbook is still sitting on her desk, but it has the name 'Hotaru Kagura' on it instead of 'Hinata Kagura'.
Hayami and Hirose see Hotaru walking to school ahead of them and call to her, "Hinata!" so that she will walk with them, but she does not answer. When they finally do arrive at school and come into the classroom, they hear Hotaru telling everyone in the class that her name is "Hotaru Kagura!" Not Hinata Kagura! They are kind of confused, but they all accept it very quickly.
Back in her room, Hinata is looking over the sketchbook saying that it was a very beautiful story and that the Promised One did not end up alone, but made many friends and was loved by everyone now.
Hotaru and everyone are in the village, having fun together and getting ready in their yukatas and having a good time together, including Hayami and Hotaru. Hamaji, like a freak, tries to make Hirose feels his chest, with a happy wink and then they all laugh at that. Hayami is there, looking shy, but happy and everyone is calling Hotaru by her name, "Hotaru" and she is extremely happy. For some reason, though, Hinata, is still there in spirit form, not free, it seems.
Thoughts - Well, this was my favorite episode so far, I really loved it and I even cried when Hinata appeared next to Hotaru and blew open the book for her, it was so beautiful! I want to know why Hinata is still not free, though, if it was such a happy story. I think there is still more with Hayami and what happened to her family and we also have to see Hotaru's grandfather's reaction and... I fear Hirose might lose his vision again really soon since things are becoming happy now and that is his purpose.
